Revisiting this stunning portrait of a California Quail - they are so interesting to watch, but as you say, they are gone in a moment when they hear a sound - so this is an amazing capture!

Malanda Warner replied:

Thank you, Heather! I see them almost every day but they scurry undercover or fly away quickly. I enjoy watching them through the windows but who knows when I can get another photo!.

We have these exact quails here in Arizona in our back yard, Malanda. We call it “fluffing out” when they do this. Very nice close up of these elusive critters....Fav / like

Malanda Warner replied:

Thank you kindly, Jerry! I love to see them with their young when they are so tiny that all one can see are little fluff balls scurrying across the ground!

Thanks Will, the background was an overgrown field of grass in warm golden/orange tones and a page wire fence, when I blurred the background this was the outcome. :)

Artist's Description

Finally, after several months of attempting to get a close-up of a California quail this chubby male decided to cooperate with me for a moment and stay put. He was busy watching over his covey that were scattering under the bushes, shrubs and into the wood pile as I approached. Although they are in abundance around my place, they typically run or fly at the slightest movement or sound. Quail form large family groups or coveys of 20 or more and can frequently be seen moving as a flock across open or grassy ground, pecking and scratching as they go. They have large broods of about 10 to 16 eggs up to three times a year. Both genders have the comma shaped head plume , although the female's plume is smaller. They do not migrate in in the winter, but instead form larger coveys with hundreds of birds. The natural grasslands of the Okanagan Valley are very similar to their habitat in California.
