English country gardens conjure up thoughts of romance, butterflies, lazy summer days and they are brimming with charm. Hollyhocks are common to many English gardens providing height and a backdrop for a tapestry of other old fashioned flower varieties. I plant many around my porch to provide height, colour and shade from the intense summer heat. This painting began last summer in my garden as a plein air work, however, I became discouraged because the paint was drying too quickly to work with, so I tucked it away for awhile and recently pulled it out to complete in studio.
